Shining Rock Poetry Anthology

"Rose Water" by Katherine Soniat

Rose Water

in the perfumed dream, golden cords
open the curtain on fox:
Under a green crown of fern, he is barking.

As feral a cry you'll not hear than this red beast
struggling.

The orchestrated humans silent by dawn.

Sepia,                   those half-lives in the leaves.
First cousin this hour is to an old collection
of lace.

The ever-ghosts.

Throat and lungs blown open,
hang mammalian under the morning star

"Rosewater" in this issue of Shining Rock is from Soniat's ninth collection, Starfish Wash-up, to be published by Etruscan Press in spring, 2023.
